Between 2009 and 2019, the number of short-terms visas issued by Schengen countries increased from 10.2 million to 15 million, with a peak in 2013 at 16.2 million visas granted. The Uniform type C visa allows the holder to travel within the Schengen Area up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If specific conditions are met, the visa can be valid up to five years. However, those holding a Limited Territorial Validity (LTV) visa are only allowed to stay in the country that issued the visa. Following travel restrictions brought in by the COVID-19 pandemic, visas issued in 2020 plummeted to 2.5 million, further reducing in 2021. Since 2022, the number increased, reaching 8.5 million in 2023. The largest number of Uniform C visas were granted to Chinese citizens.
