Approximately ** million carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) allowances were sold in the 65th Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) auction, held on Septemer 4, 2024. One allowance is equal to one metric ton of COâ‚‚. The clearing price for RGGI COâ‚‚ allowances in that auction was U.S. dollars, a record high.

The RGGI is a cooperative, market-based program among the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont, that sets a cap to reduce power sector emissions. RGGI states distribute COâ‚‚ allowances at quarterly auctions, where they can be purchased by power plants and other entities.
