Stationary installations reporting under the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) surrendered *** million units in 2022. Each unit is equivalent to one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent.Â
By April 30 of each year, all installations participating in the EU ETS must surrender a quantity of allowances to fully cover their emissions. By surrendering these allowances, the participants compensate for their emissions from the previous year. If an installation reduces its emissions, it can keep the spare allowances to cover its future needs or it trade with another installation.
