The following outlets were analyzed: Izvestiya, RIA Novosti, TASS, Interfax, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Kommersant, Vedomosti, RBC, Gazeta. ru, RT, Lenta, Regnum, Nezavisimaya Gazeta, and Vzglyad.

Citation formats

Interviews containing the pro-Kremlin narrative that Russia has a moral obligation to do something in the Donbas region gathered over 141 favorites and retweets on average on Twitter in the 70 days prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or from December 16, 2021 to February 24, 2022. Furthermore, online articles in the op-ed or column format that featured the same narrative had over 14 engagements on average. Furthermore, among the articles mentioning that the West was creating tensions in the Donbas region, interviews were the type most interacted with on Twitter.
