The figures represent the average sentiment score of all articles GDELT monitored during that time interval which include at least once the search term. The score is calculated by giving words in an article a sentiment score based on its connotation from -100 (extremely negative) to +100 (extremely positive) and taking the mean of these words per article. The overall score is the average score of all articles.

Citation formats

Online news articles mentioning the Russian President Vladimir Putin mostly had a negative tone around the world. The average sentiment score of these articles was measured at in 2024, one of the lowest scores among global leaders. Among the countries presented, Turkmenistan had the most positive tone of online articles containing the keyword "Putin" with a sentiment score of ****. Furthermore, the score was positive in Mongolia in 2017 and 2018.

Surprisingly, in Turkmenistan, as well as in the United Kingdom (UK), the score saw an increase in 2022 compared to the previous year despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moreover, in the United States and Germany, the score increased slightly relative to 2021. In most other countries, Putin's sentiment score decreased significantly during the war. For instance, a sharp decline was recorded in Norway, from in 2021 to in 2022. In general, in 2024, the average tone of German online articles mentioning Putin was the most negative compared to the other countries presented.
