The figures refer to the number of mentions and not the number of online articles. A wildcard character was used to account for different endings in Russian. A keyword can be mentioned several times in one article.
The keywords were analyzed in Russian; their translations are provided in brackets.

The analysis was based on the news websites tracked by the GDELT Project with domains .ru and .рф (.rf). News sections of several governmental websites, such as Kremlin.ru, were included. Websites of Russian radio stations were included as well. Moreover, in 2022, the data also included articles published by polling companies FOM, Levada Center, and VCIOM. In total, over 560 websites, including regional ones, were identified in 2022 and nearly 300 in the first three months of 2023. Websites of several Russian media outlets stopped operating in 2022 and were thus not included in 2023, such as Echo of Moscow and Lenta.

DPR and LPR refer to Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, parts of the Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions that Russia annexed.

Citation formats

The words starting with "Украин," such as Ukraine, Ukrainian, and Ukrainians, were mentioned nearly *** thousand in online news articles published by selected media outlets in Russia between January 1, 2022, to February 7, 2023. To compare, the words starting with "Росси," such as Russia and Russian, together with "РФ," an acronym for Russian Federation, were used over *** thousand times. Furthermore, the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, parts of which were occupied by Russia, received nearly ** thousand mentions. The words "demilitarization" and "denazification," used by the Russian government to describe the alleged purposes of the invasion of Ukraine, were not often mentioned in Russian online news articles.
