Citation formats

When asked whether people in select countries would like for their country to still have an empire, the majority of respondents said that they would be against it. More than one quarter of respondents in Britain and the Netherlands said that they would like for their country to still have an empire, and the Netherlands was the only country where fewer than half of respondents were against the idea. The countries with the largest difference between the share of respondents who were for and against the idea were from Germany, Italy and Japan, who formed the Tripartite Pact that set the Second World War in motion; this suggests that there may be some correlation between the country's actions in the Second World War and public sentiment towards colonialism today.
