In 1890, the total fertility rate in Ecuador was seven children per woman. This means that the average woman born in Ecuador in this time could be expected to have seven children over the course of her reproductive years. This fertility rate would gradually fall as Ecuador entered the 20^th century, rising briefly in the 1920s during a period of economic and political instability.
