Afghanistan's crude birth rate in 1925 was 48 births per thousand people. For the rest of the twentieth century, the numbers fluctuated between 48 and 52 births per woman, with noticeable changes in the 1950s and 90s; these changes coincided with Afghanistan's movement towards becoming more liberal and open society(although these social reforms ended in the 1970s), and the outbreak of war (there has been continuous war in Afghanistan since 1992). In 2020, the crude birth rate in Afghanistan amounts to 33 births per thousand people, a decrease of 16 births per thousand women in two decades. This decline has been attributed to increased migration among younger generations and increased access to contraception (although three quarters of Afghan couples still do not use any contraceptive methods).
