Active and micro-mobility in the Nordics - Statistics & Facts
Walking and cycling are on an upward trend in capitals across the Nordic region. More people are primarily walking or using their bicycle or e-bike to get to work, school, or running errands following the COVID-19 pandemic than they did before the pandemic. This trend holds across the board for Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki and is true for travel on foot, by bike, and by e-bike. Yet, there are some differences between these cities. Bicycle use for commuting grew most strongly in Oslo and Stockholm. Oslo also recorded the strongest growth in walking among these four capitals. Meanwhile, people in Copenhagen were not only most likely to cycle prior to the pandemic – albeit least likely to walk – the use of e-bikes for personal trips also doubled in this period. Overall, Danes were the most regular cyclists among Nordic countries. Half of Danes cycle at least once per week, while among Norwegians – the least regular cyclists in the Nordics – only 28 percent cycle at least once per week.
