The United Kingdom has one of the highest shares of people, who walk as a primary mode of transport for short journeys in Europe, at 65 percent. The UK is followed by Spain, where 55 percent of adults walk for short journeys, while only a third of Germans walk for these trips. Walking for leisure, without the necessity of reaching a particular destination, is even more prevalent than walking for the purpose of travel. 23 percent of adults in England walk for leisure at least five times per week, while only nine percent of adults walk as frequently for the purpose of travel.
