The European Union and the People's Republic of China have had established diplomatic relations with each other since 1975. These relations have become more important for both sides in light of China's rise as an economic power in the twenty-first century and its growing role as a global geopolitical player. The European Union and China are one of each other's largest trading partners, with EU exports to China being worth 230.3 billion Euros in 2022, while Chinese exports to Europe were worth 626 billion in the same year. China is particularly prolific in exporting machinery and transport equipment, as well as other manufactured goods to the EU, while China has been a key market for many of Europe's largest companies, notably in the automobile market, where giants such as Volkswagen have made an increasing share of revenues in East Asia.
