In 2024, the United States granted the highest amount of net official development assistance (ODA), reaching 63.3 billion U.S. dollars. Development aid is constantly debated, with questions about whether it hinders or fosters development, and how it can be implemented more effectively. For instance, some researchers have claimed that high amounts of development aid make recipients dependent on it, thus removing incentives for development plans undertaken by the recipient country.
