Nagorno-Karabakh conflict - statistics & facts
Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as the Republic of Artsakh, was a self-declared state claiming independence from Azerbaijan. The state was formally dissolved on January 1, 2024. The region had more than 148,000 inhabitants as of January 1, 2020, with ethnic Armenians representing the largest share of the population. On September 19, 2023, Nagorno-Karabakh's authorities reported an offensive from the Azerbaijani military. The following day, the Army of Azerbaijan reportedly took control over the region and a ceasefire was agreed upon with the participation of Russian peacekeeping forces.
