In April 2007, Mexico City became the first jurisdiction in Mexico where abortion was decriminalized, followed by Oaxaca in 2019. However, this must be done within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, otherwise it is considered a crime. Ten other states in Mexico have also adopted this legal framework.

Legal abortion patients in Mexico City 2007-2024, by method
From April 2007 to June 2024, a total of 277,268 patients underwent legal abortions in Mexico City, out of which close to 221,341 were medical abortions (abortion by pill). Another 52,883 abortions were done through vacuum aspiration. Additionally, there were 3,044 abortions performed through curettage. The majority of these legal abortion patients resided in Mexico City.
