In February 2022, Colombia's Constitutional Court voted in favor of decriminalizing abortion up to the 24th week of pregnancy, regardless of the reason. Before this ruling, abortion was only allowed when it had been caused by rape, the fetus had a malformation, or if the mother's life was in danger. Together with Cuba and Argentina, Colombia has become one of the few countries in Latin America where termination of the pregnancy is legal without restrictions until certain stages.

According to a survey carried over a year after this ruling, about 14 percent of Colombians believed that abortion should be allowed whenever a woman decides to have one, while 25 percent claimed that it should be permitted in most cases. Also 16 percent of those surveyed though that abortion should never be permitted, no matter what circumstance exists. Favorability towards legalization of abortion was higher in Argentina, Chile, and Mexico than in Colombia.
