In April 2007, Mexico City became the first jurisdiction in Mexico where abortion was decriminalized, followed by Oaxaca in 2019. However, this must be done within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, otherwise it is considered a crime. Ten other states in Mexico have also adopted this legal framework.

Between April 2007 and June 2024, approximately 54 percent of the women served by the Information System of Legal Interruption of Pregnancy regarding legal abortions in Mexico City were single. During that time period, the majority of them were women aged between 18-24 years old.
