In April 2007, Mexico City became the first jurisdiction in Mexico where abortion was decriminalized, followed by Oaxaca in 2019. However, this must be done within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, otherwise it is considered a crime. Ten other states in Mexico have also adopted this legal framework.

Between April 2007 and June 2024, almost 45 percent of the women who were assisted by Mexico City's Information System of Legal Interruption of Pregnancy regarding legal abortions were between 18 and 24 years old. During that time period, the majority of these legal abortion patients were single women.
