Femicide in Latin America – statistics & facts
In 2023, 3,953 women were murdered in Latin America on the basis of their gender — that is more than 10 women becoming victims of femicide every day. Femicide can be defined as the killing of women or girls on the basis of their gender. The definition varies widely in the legal frameworks of Latin American countries, as well as in social discourse worldwide. Major topics of discussion include whether femicide can be considered a separate crime from homicide, if femicide should refer exclusively to a murder committed by a man, and if the term is inclusive of the murders of trans and gender-diverse people.
