As of March 2025, Allu Arjun, a celebrity from the Telugu film industry, was the best paid actor in India. He was followed closely by Joseph Vijay from Tamil cinema and Bollywood actor, Aamir Khan, both of whom charged nearly three billion Indian rupees per project on average. While the list was populated by Bollywood actors, several actors from Tollywood (Telugu cinema) and Kollywood (Tamil cinema) also ranked high.

The Indian film industry

2019 witnessed the highest growth rate of the film industry in India in terms of value and was projected to rise. The upward trend was also reflected in the sales of cinema tickets, with an increase in the occupancy of cinemas in the same year. This boost in revenue triggered a chain reaction leading to significant proliferation of capital into movie production. Inadvertently, movies began to have enormous budgets in India. Bigger budgets also meant that Indian movie actors made the list of best paid celebrities across the country in recent years.

Regional film industry

The Indian film industry is segmented by the various languages spoken in the country. This has resulted in the production of a large spectrum of regional cinema. Hindi has been the dominant language of films distributed domestically, followed by Kannada, the regional language of the state of Karnataka. Furthermore, the Hindi film industry, accounted for more than 40 percent of the box office revenue in 2016. Many successful regional films, more notably from the Tamil and Telugu film industries, were sometimes remade in Hindi to reach a wider audience.
