In 2025, S.S. Rajamouli, known for films like Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2, was the leading director in India whose charge for a single project grossed two billion Indian rupees. He was followed by two other big names from the South Indian film industry, Telugu filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Kannada director Prashanth Neel during the same period.

Indian cinema – a massive presence

India has a population of over a billion, that speak more than 30 prominent regional languages. As a result, the Indian film industry has various regional cinema, of which the South Indian market has contributed the most releases of late. With box office revenues of the industry on a rise consistently, directors, actors, and related entities have been rewarded handsomely. A thriving film industry and promising returns on investment has rendered the Indian film industry as a major box office presence.

How much of a difference do regional films make?

The prominent cinema of India includes Bollywood, along with regional cinema of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. While the share of regional language film releases were similar to those of the Hindi language, their respective box office performances did not reflect this. An unwarranted effect of the disparity was the allocated budgets for production, where Bollywood movies lead the list of most expensive budgets for movie production.
