This statistic shows the number of payments per capita in Belgium from 2010 to 2020, by type of payment service. In 2020, approximately 47.3 transactions in direct debits were made in Belgium per capita. The most payments, however, were made with cards issued by resident PSPs. This number reached 213.2 payments per capita in 2020. Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases.

In 2017, Luxembourg had approximately 240 card payments per capita compared to 166 in Belgium and 250 in the Netherlands. Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
