Dutch customers made significantly more use of bank transfers for e-commerce payments than their counterparts in Europe and the MEA (Middle East and Africa) regions. In 2020, bank transfers accounted for ** percent of payments for e-commerce in the Netherlands.
This is due to the popular system of iDEAL, an inter-bank system local to the Dutch market which allows shoppers to use their bank account for online purchases. It is covered by all major Dutch consumer banks. The total number of online payments with iDEAL reached approximately *** million in 2019, in a population of slightly more than ** million people.
