This survey displays the share of investigated and substantiated elderly abuse reports by category in the United States as of 2003. During that year, about 12.5 percent of investigated elderly abuse reports were categorized as physical abuse. Neglect can be defined as the refusal or failure to fulfill one's obligations to an elderly person and includes paying for necessary home care services. Many cases of elderly abuse remain unreported and thus, may be massively underestimated.
