In the United States, a woman aged 65 years can expect to live another 19.7 years on average, while the life expectancy for men at 65 is another 17 years. As older people are at greater risk of many diseases and disabilities, it is important for this population to avoid health risk factors and have access to quality, affordable health care if they wish to live long and independent lives. However, in 2023, almost a quarter of U.S. adults aged 65 years and older reported their general health as just fair or poor, highlighting the health demands of this group. Furthermore, despite the necessity of access to health care, many older adults in the United States are concerned about the cost of care, whether it be home care, assisted living, nursing homes, prescription medication, or even insurance.
