Europe's offshore wind energy capacity has grown steadily over the past decade, reaching approximately 39 gigawatts at the end of 2025. In the period of consideration, figures continuously increased, growing from only 5 gigawatts installed across all European water bodies in 2012. In total, Europe’s renewable energy capacity reached over 933 gigawatts in 2025.
European and global offshore wind landscapeÂ
Europe has made significant progress in offshore wind energy, though it still trails Asia, which leads globally with more than 40 gigawatts of installed capacity. Europe follows with over 30 gigawatts, while North America remains far behind with only a very limited offshore wind footprint. Within Europe, the United Kingdom is the clear frontrunner, with close to 16 gigawatts installed, followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium.
Europe’s offshore wind pipelineÂ
Europe’s offshore wind capacity under construction is substantial, at just over 10 gigawatts as of mid-2024, with most projects located in Northern Europe. The United Kingdom leads the pipeline by a wide margin, while Germany and Poland also contribute notable shares. Looking ahead, annual installations are expected to exceed 20 gigawatts by the end of the decade, highlighting offshore wind’s growing role in Europe’s energy transition.
