Wind energy in the U.S. - statistics & facts
The United States is one of the largest wind energy markets in the world. In terms of installed capacity, the country ranks second worldwide, after China. As of end of 2024, the total wind power capacity installed across the United States stood at over 154 gigawatts. Overall, wind energy has become the largest renewable electricity source in the U.S., accounting for roughly 10 percent of electricity generation in the country. However, newly installed wind energy capacity has been gradually decreasing since 2020, when a record 17 gigawatts of new wind power capacity were installed. In 2024, the country's wind capacity additions amounted to four gigawatts, the lowest since 2013. Furthermore, the current Trump administration has taken significant steps to slow down energy transition efforts, impacting wind energy project developments.
