Combined onshore and offshore wind power capacity in the United Kingdom surpassed ** gigawatts in 2024. While onshore wind still makes up the largest share of wind capacity, offshore farms have seen a greater growth rate in the past decade. Furthermore, the electricity generation from offshore wind sites has surpassed that of onshore installations in the last years. In 2024, the country produced roughly **** terawatt hours of wind energy, with offshore wind turbines accounting for ** terawatt hours.
UK: a leader in the offshore wind sector
In the global arena, the UK's offshore wind capacity of around ** gigawatts in 2024 positions it as the second-largest player, behind China's **** gigawatts. This achievement underscores the country's commitment to the expansion of wind energy, especially of offshore wind power. By 2030, the UK government aims to reach ** gigawatts of offshore wind capacity, the highest target for that year across European countries.
Offshore installations in the UK
As of February 2025, the UK was home to many of the largest offshore wind farm projects operating worldwide. The Hornsea project, comprising phases 1 and 2, has an operating capacity that exceeds *** gigawatts and ranks as the largest offshore site globally. The project is located off the East Cost in the North Sea and, in total, comprises ***operational offshore wind turbines. An additional 2 wind farm phases, Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4, are currently under development.
