The number of returned internally displaced persons (IDPs) reached a peak in 2022 when more than 8.3 million IDPs were returned worldwide. An IDP is a person who has fled from their home but still resides in their home country. During the period of consideration, the number of returned refugees peaked in 2002 at 2.4 million before falling after that and fluctuating during the 2010s. In 2024, over 1.6 million refugees returned to their home countries.
