In 2020, worldwide, more than half of the hydrogen produced was made using natural gas. Hydrogen generation with natural gas is done without the use of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. These technologies involve capturing CO2 at its source, storing it underground, and utilizing it. They significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Coal was used for the production of 19 percent of the hydrogen produced in 2020.
The majority of hydrogen was produced using polluting processes. Thus, in 2020, hydrogen production was responsible for the emission of 900 million tons of CO2.
