The source distinguishes between "reserves" and "resources" as follows: Reserves: Quantities of energy sources which were accurately recorded and can be commercially extracted using current technologies. Resources: Quantities of energy sources which are either proved but currently not commercially recoverable or expected (on the basis of geological
indicators) and can be verified by exploration.
* The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Australasia has the greatest share of non-renewable energy reserves in the world. As of 2023, more than of all proved non-renewable reserves were found in this region. By comparison, Europe only held *** percent of such reserves despite being a large consumer market.
