China has the greatest number of hydrogen fuel stations of any country worldwide. As of August 2025, there were *** operational hydrogen refueling stations in the country. This was followed by South Korea and Japan. Their position as the leading providers of hydrogen automotive fuel is unsurprising given that automakers Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota are among of only a handful of car manufacturers selling hydrogen cars.Â
Shifting landscape of renewable fuels
While hydrogen infrastructure expands in some regions, the overall demand for renewable hydrogen and e-fuels is expected to grow substantially. Global demand could surge from *** petajoules in 2023 to nearly *** petajoules by 2030. Interestingly, the United States is forecast to become the largest market for these fuels by 2030, with demand reaching **** petajoules, surpassing China's current leadership in the sector.
Electric vehicles gaining ground
Despite investments in hydrogen technology, electric vehicles are projected to make the most significant gains in the automotive market. The share of petrol cars in new vehicle sales is expected to decline to percent worldwide by 2030, while electric vehicles are set to increase their market presence. This trend suggests that while hydrogen fuel stations are expanding in some countries, the broader automotive industry is shifting towards battery-electric solutions as the primary alternative to conventional fossil fuel vehicles.
