As of 2023, the global coal power capacity that was in the announced, pre-permit, and permitted phases amounted to a total of 354,555 megawatts. In comparison, there was a total of 501,323 megawatts of coal power capacity worldwide that had been retired since 2000 at that time, with an additional 25,226 megawatts of capacity retired in 2024. In addition, some 24,761 megawatts of coal power capacity was cancelled worldwide in 2024.
