In recent years, the financial sector has joined global efforts towards the energy transition as some financial institutions have divested their coal assets. In 2022, the United States had 21 globally significant financial institutions with coal divestment policies, which made it the leading country worldwide in terms of financial institutions exiting coal. France followed with 17 financial institutions divesting from coal at that time.Â
