In 2025, coal power plants with a combined capacity of more than 242 gigawatts were in construction worldwide. The volume of proposed coal power plants has been in decline in the period of consideration, as many governments increase their efforts to reduce funding of new emission-intensive fuel sources. Coal is the most polluting fossil fuel type, but still the main power source, particularly in fast-growing economies such as China.
