A survey in 2023 found that the majority of U.S. adults aged over 50 years were slightly or not at all familiar with the term palliative care, but the majority of older adults were familiar with hospice.
Once the terms were explained, nearly all the surveyed adults thought it was important to have access to these types of end-of-life care.
Palliative care focuses on treating the pain, symptoms and stress of individuals with a serious illness, rather than curative care. Hospice care includes palliative care and aims to provide comfort and quality of life of someone who is terminally ill (less than 6-months life expectancy), attending to their (and their family's) emotional and spiritual needs.
