An August 2022 survey of metaverse enthusiasts in the United States found that six in ten respondents stated that rising cost of living would make them feel more inclined to participate in the metaverse to escape the real world. Additionally, 46 percent of respondents cited threats of viruses such as COVID-19 as a cause to use the metaverse for escapism.
