The selection of countries was based on gross domestic product.

ROE of banking industry in Europe 2007-2024, by country
All leading European countries, except for Germany, saw a drop in the return on equity (ROE) of their respective banking systems in 2020 caused by COVID-19. The banking systems of Italy and Spain were particularly affected by the economic implications of the pandemic, though the drop was not as drastic as during the recession in the Euro area in 2011 and 2012. After the pandemic, the banking system of each leading European country recovered from the 2020 shock and saw a significant increase in their ROE. In 2024, Spain saw a particularly sharp increase in banking ROE, reaching percent, but Italy's ROE also exceeded ** ±è±ð°ù³¦±ð²Ô³Ù.Ìý
