The return on equity (ROE) of leading European banks reflects broader trends in the global economy. During the 2007 global financial crisis, all observed banks experienced a sharp decline in ROE. In the years that followed, ROE remained relatively stable - though subject to fluctuations - until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which triggered another significant drop, particularly for Banco Santander. Post-pandemic, all observed banks saw improvements in their ROE. As of 2024, HSBC reported the highest ROE at **** percent, followed by Banco Santander and BNP Paribas.
