As of May 2022, none of the selected blue hydrogen developers in North America had achieved the promised carbon capture rate of ** percent. The Quest, Alberta carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility developed by Shell is the one with the highest carbon capture rate, between ** and ** percent of the carbon dioxide from operation, transport, and storage of the hydrogen units. By comparison, the Air Products facility in Port Arthur, Texas has a CCS system that captured less than ** percent of the carbon dioxide generated by the hydrogen production units. CCS technologies involve capturing CO₂ emitted from the burning of fossil fuels or from other industrial processes and sequestering the CO₂ in underground storage facilities.
