Carbon dioxide emissions from coal use in Germany have fallen considerably since 1960, a year in which 700 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCOâ‚‚) were released. By 1990, coal emissions in Germany had dropped 20 percent to 569 MtCOâ‚‚. In the following decades, a transition towards renewable energy and a reduction in coal use saw German coal emissions fall even further, and by 2022 they had dropped to below 250 MtCOâ‚‚. Despite these substantial reductions, Germany remains one of the largest polluters from coal combustion.
