As of 2022, global carbon dioxide removals amounted to roughly * metric tons (GtCOâ‚‚) per year. Under the IEA's Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2050 scenario, COâ‚‚ removals through direct air capture (DAC) and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) would rise to almost *** GtCOâ‚‚ by 2040. This would require the rapid scaling up of these technologies.

CCUS technologies account for around percent of cumulative global CO₂ emissions reductions from 2022 to 2050 under the NZE scenario.
