According to a survey conducted in February 2021 in Japan, almost ** percent of respondents stated that they do not buy a plastic bag while shopping. While the majority of Japanese consumers tried to take reusable shopping bags with them, around percent admitted that they usually buy plastic bags at checkouts.
Following a change in regulations to reduce plastic waste in July 2020, retailers in Japan started to charge customers a mandatory fee for plastic bags.
