Environmental management in Japan - statistics & facts
In its most recent Seventh Strategic Energy Plan from February 2025, Japan set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 73 percent by fiscal year 2040. Additionally, the country plans to become entirely carbon-neutral by 2050. To reach those targets, the country plans to focus on nuclear and renewable energy. Due to the suspension of nuclear power generation after the nuclear disaster in 2011, Japan increased its usage of fossil fuels for energy supply. Even in recent years, fossil fuels have been the  main source of electricity production, and Japan has remained one of the  largest emitters of carbon dioxide globally.
