The figures have been collected from several publications, as (the quality of) data tracking of card payments can vary significantly between countries, and to unify figures across different countries worldwide.

All figures stem from either the��or the��. Both use figures submitted by the country's central bank to either or both sources.

2022 figures and beyond - release date November 2023 and later - made significant strides in reporting quality, sometimes causing significant breaks in methodology in individual countries. ��ƽ�� sometimes still had to calculate figures, however, as card figures were split between non-remote and remote use cases, or credit cards were not always clearly defined.��

Citation formats

Credit cards were found relatively less often in Europe than debit cards, with only five countries having at least *** credit cards per capita. For all remaining countries in this comparison, debit card penetration outweighed the credit cards. Note that the numbers provided here are estimates, based on both figures central banks have to supply and domestic sources. There are large differences in reporting this data within Europe, which sometimes can lead to gaps. Additionally, ownership of a payment card does not immediately indicate it gets typically used, as there are also large differences within Europe when it comes to the use of certain payment methods.
