The value of card payments at POS terminals in France was almost as high as that of Italy and Germany combined in 2025. This reveals itself in a comparison of the overall value of card transactions - either credit cards or debit cards - at point-of-sale (POS) terminals within the EU-27. The United Kingdom does not feature in this ranking. France's preference for cards compared to the rest of Europe may be a consequence of the different card schemes that exist within Europe's payment landscape. France has a domestic scheme - unique to that country alone - that is co-branded with Visa, enabling both credit card and debit card payments.
