From pandemic shock to energy crisis
The spike in U.S. consumer prices that began in 2021 had its roots in a cascade of disruptions. Supply chains buckled under the strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a wave of pent-up demand followed as economies reopened. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 then compounded the shock, triggering sharp increases in fuel and food costs, but domestic events such as bird flu outbreak, and rental price hikes only worsened the situation. The Federal Reserve responded with one of its most aggressive rate-hiking cycles in decades, and price growth gradually cooled. The聽energy consumer price index, which peaked in 2022, began a sustained decline in the years that followed, a clear sign that the post-pandemic inflation increase was abating. However, trade tariffs imposed by the second Trump administration have led to higher prices for imported goods, reducing the purchasing power of American consumers.
Iran war reignites energy price fears
The outbreak of war between U.S.-Israeli forces and Iran in February 2026 introduced fresh inflationary pressure. The de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz led to constraints in oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies. Oil markets responded swiftly; WTI crude oil prices rose sharply following the start of hostilities, with the annual average now forecast at roughly 74 U.S. dollars per barrel for 2026, considerably above pre-war projections. Higher energy costs typically ripple through transportation, manufacturing, and household budgets, and the conflict has also elevated uncertainty across commodity markets more broadly. This leaves the Federal Reserve in the difficult position of weighing persistent price pressures against the risk of slowing growth.
Forecasts point to gradual easing
Despite these headwinds, inflation projections indicate the annual average rate will hover around 3.2 percent in 2026 before moderating to roughly 2.1 percent in 2027 and stabilizing near that level in subsequent years. Whether this trajectory holds will depend largely on how long the Middle East conflict persists, the path of global oil supply, and the Federal Reserve's policy response to any renewed price pressures.
