The cost of living in the United States has remained a persistent burden since a wave of price acceleration took hold in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which helped push annual inflation to a 40-year high of eight percent. While the rate moderated to 2.6 percent in 2025, monthly inflation re-accelerated to 3.3 percent in March 2026, driven in part by a sharp energy price increase that pushed gasoline prices sharply higher following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the U.S.-Israel war with Iran, adding renewed pressure on household budgets.
The cost of living gap across states
Where an American lives has a strong impact on everyday expenses. In 2025, Hawaii recorded the steepest state costs, with a composite index of 183.9, more than double that of the least expensive states. These gaps reflect a mix of factors including housing supply constraints, population density, geographic isolation, and local labor market conditions. Regional spending patterns from 2024 reinforce these differences: households in the western United States spent 92,625 U.S. dollars on average per year, compared to 70,376 U.S. dollars in the south.
Housing and food squeeze budgets nationwide
Housing has become the defining cost burden for American households. In 2024, housing led consumer spending at 33.4 percent of total expenditure, averaging 26,266 U.S. dollars per consumer unit, and the consumer price index for rent of primary residence reached 435 index points in 2025. Approximately 42.3 percent of renters paid more than 35 percent of their gross income on rent that year. Average food spending per household rose to 10,169 U.S. dollars in 2024, nearly 39 percent higher than in 2020, compounding the strain on lower-income Americans.
Can consumers feel relief ahead?
Consumer morale has suffered as a result. Sentiment fell to 53.3 in March 2026, well below pre-2022 levels, and only 31 percent of U.S. adults approved of President Trump's handling of the cost of living issue as of November 2025. With annual inflation projected to ease toward 2.2 percent by 2027, a gradual improvement in purchasing power remains possible, but the cumulative price increases since 2022 have left a lasting mark on what Americans pay to live.
