American wages continued rising in recent years, and the recovery in real purchasing power has been notable; wages have outpaced inflation since early 2023, a meaningful reversal after a period in which price increases eroded workers' take-home pay. Monthly average hourly earnings on private nonfarm payrolls climbed steadily across 2024 and into 2025, and median hourly earnings adjusted for inflation rose since 2022. However, following the outbreak of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran in 2026, another round of rising prices could mean a further reduction in the effective purchasing power in the United States.
A persistent pay divide by gender and race
Wage inequality by gender and race remains a defining feature of the U.S. labor market. Male full-time workers continued to earn noticeably more than their female counterparts in 2024, a gap that has widened since 2022. Disparities are also pronounced along racial and ethnic lines: Asian workers recorded the highest median weekly earnings among all groups, while Hispanic or Latino workers recorded the lowest. Gender and racial disparities are not mutually exclusive and often intersect, resulting in compounded .
Educational attainment and the industry sector continue to be strong determinants of earnings in the United States. College-educated workers earned substantially more per week than those without a degree. Across industries,聽the utilities sector led on wages per employee, followed by management of companies and finance. Healthcare practitioners and surgeons ranked at the top of the occupational wage distribution.
The frozen federal floor
The federal minimum wage has remained at 7.25 dollars per hour since 2009, and its real value has declined substantially in the years since. Some states have responded by setting their own floors; the District of Columbia posted the highest state-level minimum in 2026, while five states still apply the federal rate by default. The burden of low wages falls disproportionately on younger workers: close to half of all minimum wage earners in 2024 were between 16 and 24 years old, pointing to the particular vulnerability of young workers to stagnant federal wage policy.
