Aluminum industry worldwide - statistics & facts
Aluminum is one of the world’s most abundant metals, typically extracted from bauxite ore. Guinea, Australia, and Vietnam are cited as hosting the largest bauxite reserves, while China is leading the way in terms of aluminum smelter production levels. Chinese aluminum-producing companies Chinalco, Hongqiao Group, and the Xinfa group world’s leading producers in 2024. They shared the market with Rusal, Alcao, and Rio Tinto, which also record among the highest aluminum outputs worldwide.Â
Steady growth and the growing need for recycled aluminum
After recovering from the pandemic, the global aluminum industry has seen steady growth, reaching a production quantity of around 73 million metric tons in 2024, an increase of about 3.2 percent compared to 2023. With demand still growing, this trend will likely continue for a bit. Roughly 58 percent of global demand is in China, with Europe and the rest of Asia coming in behind. Unlike before, the Chinese market is shifting toward a supply deficit in 2024 and 2025, while the rest of the world has an oversupply. This is due to the Chinese government's imposed production limit of around 45 million tons. This in turn increases the trend towards recycled aluminum, which is mostly produced in China and other Asian countries. That trend is furthermore driven by an increased demand for sustainability and decarbonization in production processes. The use of recycled aluminum in construction, the automotive industry, and the renewable energy sector is therefore a trend to watch. The Gulf countries, China, and India are already transitioning towards more renewable energy sources. Many industries have begun to alter their procedures to cut their greenhouse gas emissions and aid in the global fight against climate change. Consequently, sustainability has become an increasingly important issue for the aluminum industry since it significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. Aluminum production processes are highly energy dependent, from mining to the final product. Specifically, the electrolysis process for extracting aluminum from bauxite significantly releases more greenhouse gas than the other manufacturing steps. In 2023, the electrolysis phase emitted 791 million tons of carbon dioxide, less than in previous years. One way to decarbonize the aluminum industry is by recycling. Aluminum is almost 100 percent recyclable, and this process requires way less energy than producing it from scratch.Â
Trade disputes and challenging tariffs
The current U.S.-imposed trade war and tariffs pose a significant challenge for certain aluminum industries. In 2024, global exports and imports of alumina have decreased. The current year, 2025, will likely witness further trade conflicts. After already imposing steel and aluminum tariffs in 2018, the second Trump administration imposed import tariffs of 50 percent on all steel and aluminum imports to the U.S. The United States was the leading importer of aluminum and aluminum products in 2024, with imports valued at around 28.3 billion U.S. dollars. The leading exporters are China and Germany. Especially the European and German aluminum production was declining already due to increased competition from abroad. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has led to increasing energy prices and production costs. The European Union and the United States signed a trade deal, but tariffs for aluminum products remained at 50 percent, which may have an impact on aluminum prices.
